What does conscious fashion mean to you?
Conscious fashion is mindful from start to finish. It is thinking about your impact on the planet and the people around you. It’s the way all business should be done, but it surely takes time and a lot of thought.
Tell us more about your ‘lightbulb’ moment; what prompted you to start Sustainably Chic?
I studied fashion in college, and felt that there was an issue with the industry during my studies. In all, it has been seven years of figuring my place in it, but three years ago I just decided on a whim to start the blog. I couldn’t keep my mouth shut anymore, and Sustainably Chic was the perfect outlet to express my concerns and share my ideas.
What would you like to see changed in the industry in the next 10 years?
Brands being more receptive towards sustainable fashion. Working within sustainable fashion takes a lot of patience, and it definitely can’t happen overnight for every brand. But if we all take baby steps to improve throughout the next decade, and not repeat past mistakes, we could have a great future in fashion. There is a way we can enjoy the clothes we wear while taking care of the planet and providing jobs – everyone just needs to find their groove.
What’s a quote you carry with you?
My Grandmaman always says, “Your health is like a savings account.” I apply this to my work and sustainability, too. If we aren’t conscious and respectful now, what will we have in the future?
How would you like to be remembered?
If anything, as a conscious fashion influencer who made the movement inviting. Right now, this is most important to me – I want people to see this movement as exciting yet crucial. It’s about all of us despite our differences in culture, religion, diets… I can go on and on. I just want my site and mission to be contagious, because I think it spreads this message so much quicker.
