4 Ways To Wear Prints If You Hate Wearing Prints

Printed textile started out as a form of storytelling, and we use printing techniques such as blockprinting on our garments to continue that tradition. We believe in designing from the past and so we choose prints that already exist. We reinterpret them in terms of playing with whitespace, outlines, motif size, and repeat. It is through the lens of these stories and existing designs that we choose to understand the histories before us and reinterpret the narrative. Prints are a great, bold addition to one’s closet, and can be worn any time of the year. However, we know it can be an unsettling task for those who don’t know how to incorporate them into an outfit.

Here are 4 ways to wear prints if you hate wearing prints:

1 Printed Item Per Outfit

Start small by introducing print in a small part of your outfit, such as a printed bag, scarf or shoes. The print can be the focal element you need, and not overpower the entire ensemble. Then as you’re more comfortable with prints, wear a printed blazer, or printed pants with the rest of your outfit toned down.

Scale Matters

Prints come in all colours, shapes and sizes, so if you want something more subtle, look for smaller prints in monotone. This allows the garment to be easily paired with others, while still adding some flair to your look. Scaled up prints look bold and daring, but paired with minimal accessories make it more wearable.

Go Neutral

When you’re wearing a bold print, it helps to balance it out with neutral colours. Solid colours such as black, white, or nudes are great bases to make sure your outfit looks well put together. It gives out an easy vibe, and still lets you to have fun with your outfit. The accent colour of the print can either contrast your base colour to make it stand out, or stick to the same colour family for a toned-down look – just remember to keep it consistent.

TIP: Treat stripes as a neutral, and go for an edgier dual print look.

Jewelry: Keep It Minimal

Whether it is bold or minimal, let the print shine by downplaying your accessories. Instead of wearing statement necklaces, opt for simple chains or classic rings that don’t take away from your print, but elevates the entire outfit to make it more sophisticated.
