Ying began Ying the Label grounded on the philosophy of “less is more; odd is beautiful”, dedicating this brand to tell her stories through watercolour art. We joined with her to talk about the intentions and inspirations behind this self-expression.
Describe to us what Ying would be as a watercolour design.
Ying as a watercolour design would be a nature-inspired art piece filled with colourful flowers spreading across a stretch of mountains and an open sky.
What is your creative process like? How does an idea move to reality?
I get inspired by many things in my daily live. When I hear lyrics that are meaningful, or when I get a spark of inspiration, I’ll “record” my emotions at that very moment through a painting. My pieces typically end up looking like florals because of the shapes and strokes that I use. From these inspirations, I create art pieces, which then gets curated, edited, and digitally translated onto fabrics. I then design a collection of silhouettes that frame the art so that it takes the centre stage. The final pieces are like a gallery of wearable art – one of a kind, made with intention.
Where do you find inspiration?
From anything and everything – music, daily happenings, to conversations.
What’s a quote you carry with you?
It is my right to keep dreaming, and believing that I will succeed.
How would you like to be remembered?
That someone who inspires through her passion, dreams, stories and creations.
We are inspired by Ying’s creative outlook that motivated her to create her own label and are proud to have her as Fieldtesters, a group of inspiring individuals that test MATTER products in their everyday journeys of passion, to help us improve durability and design. Ying is using the Mobi Indigo Pouch.
